HAVE you got an old air raid shelter hidden away somewhere in your garden? A rusty old Anderson shelter made of corrugated iron - or an overgrown brick shelter that you now use as a garden shed. There are more of them about than you might think. And the people of York have been busy taking selfies of them for a project to record the long-lasting impact of the wartime air-raids on York. The Raids Over York project started on 11 August 2020 - the 80th anniversary of the first raid on the city, which saw York Cemetery and the Fishergate area hit by high explosive bombs.

Graham and his family at Blackpool Pier. He said: Even in wartime Mum and Dad made sure we had an annual holiday. We did, in fact, have relatives who lived in Blackpool, but we didn t stay with them, we booked Accommodation , which took the form of a boarding house, where we had bedrooms, but we provided all the food, and the landlady cooked it for us. During the year, in preparation for our holiday, Mum would secrete various special items, like tins of peaches (very rare) and before we set off she would post a parcel of goodies to the boarding house address, and it was there waiting for us when we arrived. Those holidays were very special for us!
