“In a year that has been anything but standard, forcing states to administer standardized exams is just plain poor federal policy,” NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said. “The state is making the most of a bad situation by scaling back this year’s testing requirements and limiting stress on students who already have gone through so much. Commissioner Rosa, Chancellor Young and the Board of Regents are doing what’s necessary to  ....

Former Chancellor Betty Rosa named NY education commissioner

Rosa, in brief remarks to conclude a Zoom meeting, called for an educational renaissance in New York.
Our state, our nation and the world are at a crossroads, she said. We must rebuild in new ways and on many levels. I submit that investing in education is foundational to our recovery and the future of our state and nation.

NY's Ed Commissioner: Federal Aid Should Not Supplant State Funding

3:22
Governor Andrew Cuomo continues his push to win several billion dollars in aid in the next federal COVID-19 relief package. The Democrat has sent a letter to New York’s Congressional delegation, saying the funding is “paramount” to the state’s recovery. Meanwhile, New York Education Commissioner Betty Rosa says she’s against a proposal by Cuomo to use money from a previous federal bailout to offset state funding. She says it wasn’t meant for that purpose.
Governor Cuomo says the state faces a $15 billion deficit for the current fiscal year and the next one, which begins in April. He says unless President Biden and Congress approve a bailout for state and local governments, there will have to be across the board cuts to state programs, including education. His budget proposal tries to mitigate those potential cuts by using the $4 billion in federal aid to help pay the state’s schools’ day-to-day expenses. ....
