With a population of a little over 8,000, Hancock County has one of the nation s highest per capita death rates from COVID-19. Poverty and lack of access to health care in Hancock has been an ongoing problem. Sparta Mayor Allen Haywood says that many of the deaths from COVID-19 were in nursing homes. It was such a quick spike in both nursing homes and it was fatal in both nursing homes, Haywood said. ....
