The Australian Human Rights Commission welcomes the considered and constructive response to the 55 recommendations made in its 2020 Respect@Work Report on the National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces. The Report and the Federal Government’s response, with whole of community buy in, paves the way for globally ground-breaking reform on workplace sexual harassment.
“The fact that the Government has accepted in whole, in part, in principle or noted all 55 recommendations is a credit to the thousands for Australians who participated in the National Inquiry, and those who have used their voices to call for change,” said Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins.  ....

New harassment laws to hit the workforce - but is it just lip service?

8 April 2021 4:22pm
The federal government will adopt 55 recommendations of the Respect@Work report, either in full or in part, more than a year after receiving the document in January 2020.
The landmark report from Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins was released publicly last March, and includes recommendations which are aimed at shifting the system from being complaints-based with the onus of proof on victims to one where employers must work to actively create safe workplaces by stamping out sexual harassment.
The changes to the Fair Work Act and the Sex Discrimination Act include holding politicians and judges, previously exempt from the laws, accountable when sexual harassment claims are made in their workplace. Sexual harassment will now be a valid reason for dismissal and will also be included in the Fair Work Act’s definition of “serious misconduct”. ....

Sexual assault support services:
When she gave her incendiary Press Club Speech in Canberra this week urging sexual assault and abuse survivors like herself to share your truth, it is your power , the Prime Minister, his Cabinet with one member off on stress leave and another soon to join her and all the staff of what might be one of the most toxic workplaces in Australia were just up the hill, in a shining stone building under a slow-waving flag. ....
