In Garfield County, the three commissioners have decided that they themselves would be the sole members of our County Health Board. Given the fact that none of the commissioners have any medical or public health expertise, we have grave concerns about this decision.
Every county in Colorado is required to have a County Health Board to develop and promote policies to protect the health of that community. In a major health crisis like that of the Covid pandemic, this board is more important than ever.
Larger counties those with populations of 100,000 or more are required by law to include at least five health experts and community members on their County Health Boards. ....

Politically speaking, Pitkin County commissioners and Garfield County commissioners rarely see eye-to-eye.
But relations between the boards at either end of the Roaring Fork Valley have reached new lows since August when a Garfield County commissioner denounced Pitkin County as “disrespectful, arrogant, gutless and selfish.”
So, on Tuesday, at what was likely his last official meeting after 12 years on the board, Pitkin County Commissioner George Newman had some parting advice for his colleagues when it comes to Garfield County commissioners: forget ‘em.
To make his point, Newman told a joke about a businessman staying at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem who watches an older man kneel and pray at the Wailing Wall every morning for four days. Finally, he approaches the man and asks him what he’s praying for. ....

County wins, judge orders ranch to open road outside De Beque

A federal judge has ordered a guest ranch to remove a locked gate on Garfield County Road 200 outside De Beque after agreeing with the county that it is a public road, a decision that improves public access to tens of thousands of acres of federal land.
Judge R. Brooke Jackson with the U.S. District Court of Colorado has sided with Garfield County in its effort to get the High Lonesome Ranch to unlock the gate on the road, also called North Dry Fork Road, about 20 miles northwest of De Beque. He ruled that road, and Middle Dry Fork Road, also accessed beyond the locked gate, are public roads. ....
