AUGUSTA, Maine At a Blaine House Ceremony Tuesday, Maine Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) Commissioner Amanda Beal presented Maine Forest Service Ranger Specialist Kent Nelson with the Silver Smokey Bear Award, the highest national honor one can receive for outstanding work and significant program impact in wildfire prevention.
Nelson is one of two people to earn this national recognition in 2021, according to the DACF. This is the first time since the 1990s that a Mainer has won the award. ....

The Palermo Community Library will host a virtual presentation by John Bunker titled, Grandma’s Apple Orchard: The perfect orchard with only 12 trees. How did she do it? The event will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. The free presentation will be accessible via Zoom and Facebook Live.
Bunker, a Colby alumnus, was presented the 2019 Commissioner’s Distinguished Service Award by Gov. Janet Mills and Commissioner Amanda Beal for Saving Maine’s Apple Heritage. He also has authored two books, “Apples and the Art of Detection: Tracking Down, Identifying, and Preserving Rare Apples,” and “Not Far From the Tree a Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo Maine 1804-2004.” ....

Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) Commissioner Amanda Beal announced at the virtual Agricultural Trades Show that the Commissioner s Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2021 is Penelope (Penny) Jordan, a fourth-generation farmer in Cape Elizabeth, and local community organizer.

Over three decades, Jordan has emerged as a leading voice in Maine Agriculture. She was instrumental in starting the Cape Farm Alliance and is a past president and 12-year member of the Maine Farm Bureau. Penny has served on the Cumberland County Farm Bureau board, is currently on the Maine Sustainable Agriculture Society board, and is a member of the New England Farmers Union.
