Alaska Journal | GUEST COMMENTARY: Will Manchin, Murkowski, Biden cave to extremists?

Fri, 06/11/2021 - 9:53am U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-WV, leaves the U.S. Capitol following the last Senate vote of the day on June 10 in Washington, DC. (Photo/Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images/TNS) Last weekend, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., became a lightning rod for the extreme progressive wing of his party when he stood firm in support of the filibuster. While the term “filibuster” gets thrown around usually in conjunction with colorful language a lot by folks in Washington, D.C., it is a sensible procedural step for the majority of America. It keeps a party with a slight majority from ram-rodding bad policies through Congress. It represents a check-and-balance to executive overreach, and in this case, a roadblock to many of the Biden Administration’s most radical campaign priorities; ones that would harm Alaska and our jobs, revenues and in areas related to states’ rights.
