Parents defend Silver coach after ‘boxing’ story

More than a dozen parents of Silver High School student- athletes have come to the defense of strength and conditioning coach Tylon Wilder, who was the subject of an Albuquerque television station story late last week criticizing a “boxing” drill Wilder organized among members of the school’s softball team.
Wilder was involved with Silver High’s football program this past school year, and has worked with the softball program for the past two years.
“Wilder, during the summer, offers his conditioning program to schools around the country and is paid for it. This is his business,” a fellow New Mexico high school coach told the Daily Press on condition of anonymity. “Silver High School gets the training for free for all of the sports that want to have him help their programs, and he has definitely ....

Hawkins hired to lead Silver Schools

The Silver school board began their meeting Monday night with an hour-plus-long closed session to discuss their selection of a new leader for the district to succeed retiring Superintendent Audie Brown, and closed the meeting three hours later with a unanimous vote to hire Hobbs Municipal Schools Assistant Superintendent William D. “Will” Hawkins to fill the job beginning this summer.
“I’m overjoyed and pretty excited about the whole situation,” Hawkins told the Daily Press on Monday evening after the vote. “My family and I look forward to the move, and I can’t wait to get home to Silver City.” ....

According to Fredrick W. Parker, a finalist for the position of Silver Schools superintendent, the elements of developing and improving instruction have been his primary focus through a 23-year career in education. But he is quick to add that he has worked especially hard to form and “interweave partnerships with all departments in a school district” to achieve greater positive results.
