Quincy to spend $9 million on Adams Academy, lawsuit settlement


QUINCY  The city is one step closer to buying the historical Adams Academy building and settling a lawsuit over its ownership thanks to a $9 million allocation of Community Preservation Act money.
Quincy is decades into a legal battle over the ownership of the Adams Academy building downtown and the revenue it generates. Recent moves to sell the 149-year-old school by the trustee of the Adams Temple and School Fund to benefit the private Woodward School for girls prompted Mayor Thomas Koch to take the building by eminent domain, settling the issue of ownership once and for all. 
The Quincy Community Preservation Commission recently gave the OK for the city to spend $9 million on the Adams Academy building and the two parcels next door, as well as pay to settle in court. The mayor s administration did not provide a breakdown of exactly how much each of those things will cost, citing ongoing negotiations.  ....

QUINCY  Ruth Jones, who led the city s health department through the coronavirus pandemic, is set to retire this month.
Jones, who served as a nurse for 19 years in the city s health department, was named as its leader in April of 2019. Less than a year later, she was tasked with seeing the city through a global pandemic that still has the nation s health systems under immense strain.
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Jones has been praised by local leaders and residents alike for her dedication and quick thinking in the face of an unprecedented situation.  ....
