The sum is $249,575 higher than the 2020-21 budget, Town Manager Dennis Simmons said in a May 28 email response to questions. Simmons said leading factors in the increase include the 2.5% wage hike for all employees except the police department, whose union contract is not yet settled. “We are also requesting the addition of one full-time police officer, though we are applying for a grant to pay for 75% of the wages and fringe benefits.” The town saw an increase in water rates and hydrant rentals, Simmons continued; and selectmen are requesting an increase in their contingency from $30,000 to $50,000. ....

To download an application to request an absentee ballot, visit wiscasset.org Unopposed candidates on the ballot include Desiree Bailey and Indriani Demers for the school committee and Phil Di Vece for Wiscasset Water District trustee. All three are incumbents. No candidates are on the ballot for eight vacancies on the Budget Committee. Jefferson Slack and Katharine Martin-Savage chose not to seek re-election to the select board. Their successors would each be new to the five-member board. ....

File photo Wiscasset schools’ maintenance and transportation director John Merry told the school committee Tuesday night, April 27, he has spoken with someone about bus service and would be again, then he would talk with Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood. Committee member Indriani Demers asked if Merry was referring to contracted bus service. Yes, said member Michelle Blagdon. “We’re having such a hard time filling (driver) positions. We’re always short . we’ve spent the last four years being short on bus drivers. This way, we’d at least know our buses are all covered. We won’t have to pull staff to drive buses.” ....
