Covid-19: Transmission rates in schools remain low despite outbreaks doubling in one week

Transmission rates for Covid-19 appear to remain low in schools despite the number of outbreaks in education settings doubling from 29 to 61 in the space of a week, latest figures indicate.
The HSE Covid-19 testing report for schools, which covers May 2nd-May 8th, shows positive cases among pupils or staff were detected in 302 schools.
Of the 7,582 close contacts tested as a result, a total of 128 tested positive, or a positivity rates of 1.7 per cent. ....

Leaving Cert students 'terrified' about contracting Covid in run-up to exams

Regional members of the Irish Second Level Students’ Union say many students have expressed worry about contracting Covid-19 or being categorised as a close contact through no fault of their own.
Eva McDonnell, a sixth-year student and regional officer based in Ballintemple in Cork, said it was a frequent topic of conversation.
She said her chosen course has very high points which are likely to rise higher still this year.
“I’m terrified of contracting Covid-19 beforehand. I’ve put so much work into these exams, and I don’t want to see that go to waste. I’d be devastated if I realised that those hours of study and piles of biology flashcards were all for nothing.” ....

WIT staff reject terms of proposed IT Carlow merger

The proposed Technological University of the South East has been dealt another setback.
Staff at Waterford Institute of Technology have rejected terms for the proposed amalgamation between it and IT Carlow.
The Teachers Union of Ireland branch at the college has cited treatment of members serving on the amalgamation s working groups, as well as concerns regarding funding and governance.
The Technological University has been on course to be founded for next January.
It is a major reversal from when the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was put to WIT staff in 2019. On that occasion it was overwhelmingly accepted by 93% of TUI members. ....
