New reports highlight wage theft in apparel supply chains in India, push for joint liability of global brands
The Asia Floor Wage Alliance recently released a report on Wage Theft, titled Money Heist : COVID 19 Wage Theft in Global Garment Supply Chains which studies the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic-induced recession on Asian garment workers employed in the supply chains of major global apparel brands. It highlights wage theft as the most common experience and pre-dominant consequence of the pandemic-induced recession on garment workers, which resulted in a devastating and prolonged humanitarian crisis. 2,185 garment workers employed across 189 supplier factories located in six countries - Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Bangladesh - took part in the survey for the report. Stealing from the impoverished

Stealing from the impoverished

We hear too little about the fate of workers who toil in our factories and in other places. This is partially because we have lost the labour unions that once spoke for them to a large extent. The report says that Pakistani workers, notably women, have suffered the worst “wage theft” during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to data, 244,510 workers in over 50 factories in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad were deprived of some $85 million owed to them, on the pretext that the factories were not paid due to cancellation of already placed orders. The laying off of workers without wages resulted in grave hardships, notably for the most vulnerable workers. These ....

More hours, less money: Garment workers hit by COVID-19 rights rollback

6 Min Read
CHENNAI, India (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Sacked from his job at a Pakistani garment factory in the early days of the pandemic, Abdul Wasid was rehired three months later - for lower pay and longer hours. He now has to borrow money to make ends meet.
Wasid’s experience reflects a rollback on labour rights in the global garment industry due to COVID-19 as fashion brands pile pressure on their suppliers and, in turn, on factory workers, according to two new reports by labour advocacy groups.
“I was desperate because I hadn’t earned anything for months after being fired and agreed to everything they said. Now I’m depending on small loans to survive,” Wasid, 35, said by video call from his Karachi home after finishing a 10-hour shift. ....
