Seadrill Ltd., a deepwater drilling contracting company, owned by billionaire
John Fredriksen, said it is ready to write off a debt of over $4.8 billion, giving lenders a 99 percent stake in the company, according to
Finansavisen.
The debt write-off proposal was presented to the US bankruptcy court in Texas ahead of the Easter holidays. The offer means that 99 percent of the ownership of Seadrill will pass on the lenders with just 1 percent left with the current shareholders.
According to Finansavisen, the proposed write-off will help Seadrill cut its debt by more than 86.5% to $750 million. ....

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Feb. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The Board of Seadrill Limited ( Seadrill or the Company ) (OSE: SDRL) (OTCQX: SDRLF) today announces that Chapter 11 cases have been filed in the Southern District of Texas in respect of Seadrill s wholly-owned subsidiaries Seadrill GCC Operations Ltd, Asia Offshore Drilling Limited, Asia Offshore Rig 1 Limited, Asia Offshore Rig 2 Limited and Asia Offshore Rig 3 Limited (jointly, the AOD Companies ).
The Chapter 11 cases were filed as a protective measure to support Seadrill s broader comprehensive financial restructuring and will in no way affect the safe and efficient operation of the AOD offshore drilling units. The Company will request authority to pay its key trade creditors and employee wages and benefits without change or interruption and expects it will pay all suppliers and vendors in full under normal terms for goods and services provided during the Chapter 11 cases. ....

Rig giant Seadrill has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US for a handful of its wholly owned subsidiaries.
The rig owner on Sunday filed Chapter 11 cases as “a protective measure to support Seadrill’s broader comprehensive financial restructuring” and would “in no way affect the safe and efficient operation of the [Asia Offshore Drilling] offshore drilling units”.
