The aviation industry in early 1960s was just growing. When I landed at Vancouver airport from New Delhi, via Tehran, London, Prestwick and Winnipeg at the end of January, 1966our Vancouver airport was still very small. It is now the South terminal for mostly local air traffic. Since then, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has undergone tremendous growth. It has now become one of the best airports in the world. Another interesting feature of YVR is that it is the only airport in the world that greets passengers in Punjabi along with some other languages. This is a reflection of the Punjabi community’s contribution and recognition. It has been a very tough and challenging struggle for our pioneers and their descendants to reach this point. Every day for the past month, I have opened the godforsaken app known as Instagram and have been greeted with story after story of Instagram users proclaiming loud headlines such as, âStop Asian Hate.â As an Asian-American myself â Japanese on my motherâs side and white on my fatherâs â I initially greeted these story posts with a sense of relief. Finally, people were talking about this deeply serious issue and elevating the voices of the community.
But that initial optimistic feeling soon turned into disappointment. What happened with the Black Lives Matter movement last summer is happening again â as is the nature of digitized activism, the serious issues of a community are being trivialized into a digestible form of activism that ultimately dilutes the struggles of a community into an aesthetic way to prove to other people that you are âwoke.â And unfortunately, the serious p ....
