The Maori MP who was ejected Tuesday from New Zealand s parliament for not wearing a necktie has been successful in throwing out the dress-code requirement to wear what he calls a colonial noose.

The Māori party co-leader Rawiri Waititi has defied the order to wear a tie in the New Zealand parliament’s debating chamber – and was promptly ejected by the Speaker. “It’s not about ties it’s about cultural identity mate,” Waititi said as he left the chamber, local media reported. Earlier, exchanges over the dress code between Waititi and the Speaker of the House, Trevor Mallard, had grown heated, with Waititi saying he had chosen to wear. ....

Debbie Donnelly s mother Setsuko moved to New Zealand from Japan in the 1950s. While she thrived and co-founded the Japan Society in Wellington, people were not always nice to her and at times, she was on the receiving end of racism.
The ‘forever foreigner’ concept is often only applied to migrants of colour, who then face social stigma, stereotypes and racism in Aotearoa. Mandy Te investigates the phenomenon and how it impacts on Kiwi who are made to feel like strangers in their own homeland.
