I ate a three course meal designed by AI and survived to tell the tale

Welcome to Adventures with AI, a column exploring what happens when artificial intelligence takes control of everyday tasks.
Eating out is one of my great pleasures; cooking is not.
Unfortunately, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been doing a lot of the latter and almost none of the former.
Preparing meals has become paricularly tedious during London’s latest lockdown. So like an unhappy couple in a sexless marriage, I’ve been trying to spice things up in my domestic life. Only instead of strapping on a gimp mask and a ball gag, I’ve been experimenting with AI. ....

Arab Media Spreads Wikipedia Hoax Claim About Late Saudi Oil Minister

Arab Media Spreads Wikipedia Hoax Claim About Late Saudi Oil Minister
27 Feb 2021
Former Saudi Oil Minister Ahmed Zaki Yamani, who died Tuesday, was an architect of the 1973 oil embargo and widely misreported by Arab-language media, including CNN’s Arab edition, to have been the first Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Arab News reported Wednesday that the claim of him serving as secretary-general was false and attributed it to Yamani’s page on the Arabic Wikipedia, which has included the false claim since the page’s creation in 2005.
Unsourced until late 2019, an editor added a citation in November of that year to the official government page about Yamani at the website for the Ministry of Energy, Industry, and Minerals, which appeared to copy the Wikipedia article. ....

Wikipedia has transformed knowledge – so why is it still looked down on?

In 2015 the US talk show host and comedian Stephen Colbert coined “truthiness”, one of history’s more chilling buzzwords. “We’re not talking about truth,” he declared, “we’re talking about something that seems like truth – the truth we want to exist.”
Colbert thought the poster-boy for our disinformation culture would be Wikipedia, the open-source internet encyclopedia started, more or less as an afterthought, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in 2001. If George Washington’s ownership of slaves troubles you, Colbert suggested “bringing democracy to knowledge” by editing his Wikipedia page.
By 2018, the magazine Atlantic was calling Wikipedia “the last bastion of shared reality in Trump’s America”. Yes, its coverage is lumpy, idiosyncratic, often pernickety, and not terribly well written. But it’s accurate to a fault, extensive beyond all imagining, and energetically policed. (Wikipedia ....

Israeli Beresheet Spacecraft Allegedly Brought Microscopic Organisms to the Moon, Possibly Taking Over

27 December 2020, 3:56 am EST By
There are very few things on Earth that can survive anything, and among them are small microscopic animals known as tardigrades, which are also deemed as water bears and they are incredibly indestructible that they might actually be the only living organism on the moon right now.

According to Inverse, scientists believe this possibility after an Israeli Beresheet spacecraft attempted to land on the moon in April 2019.
Unfortunately, things did not go well, according to plan and the spacecraft ended up crash landing on the lunar surface along with its unusual cargo, including a copy of the entire English-language Wikipedia, a disk containing 30 million pages of details about the Earth, and thousands of the tiny dehydrated water bears. ....
