Although almost all those who had lost their jobs in April to May last year because of the pandemic-induced economic downturn found jobs by February this year, but 86 per cent said they are not earning enough to meet their daily necessities. A recent survey conducted by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in association with Oxfam Bangladesh stated that people s working hours shrank significantly, and they cut food and other expenses, obtained credit and lost their savings. If the government fails to take effective livelihood measures and generate employment, the second wave of the pandemic may turn out to be the worst. ....

In June 2020, World Food Programme, together with Oxfam Bangladesh, Weather Risk Management Services and Green Delta Insurance Company, launched a climate-risk insurance pilot scheme to support casual agricultural labourers affected by a prolonged monsoon flood. Funded by KIOCA (the Korea International Cooperation Agency), the scheme compensates vulnerable families for wage losses due to the floods so they can get back on their feet and prevent long-lasting negative impacts. ....

Kurigram, located in the northwest region, is the poorest district of Bangladesh. The northwest region has already started facing slow onset climate change (temperature rise, changes in precipitation, drought) as well as sudden climatic shocks (floods, erratic rainfall). Such climatic events put huge pressure on the livelihood of the inhabitants of this region. ....
