Chief executive and returning officer Paul Medd today blamed a “software issue” for publishing incorrectly that a deputy chairman of a parish council was a candidate for a vacancy on Wisbech Town Council.
Geoff Mathias, a Tydd St Giles parish councillor, found himself at the centre of a political mystery when his name appeared on a list of declared candidates for Octavia Hill ward by election on May 6.
Days later his name had been removed and the list of candidates reduced to three.

The Conservatives have announced their candidate in the upcoming May local elections for a vacant town council seat.
Sidney Imafidon, of Lynn Road, Wisbech, has been chosen to represent the party in the bi-election for the Octavia Hill Ward on the town council.
Mr Imafidon, who has been renovating historic Ely House, explained his interests include heritage and preservation and said he had moved to Wisbech to follow some dreams.
He said: I bought the Duke s Head, one of the oldest pubs in town which was in danger of demolition and set about restoring it, saving it and opening it for business.
