How the First Surviving Quintuplets Became a Tourist Attraction

National Film Board of Canada/Library and Archives Canada (PA-155518)
On May 28, 1934, a miracle happened.
In a modest farmhouse in Corbeil, Ontario, Canada, parents Oliva and Elzire Dionne welcomed five additions to their family: Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie, and Marie. Soon they would become the first known set of quintuplets to survive infancy.
Their novelty made the Dionne sisters almost instantly internationally popular. “Five Babies Named; Continue to Gain,” announced
The New York Times in its May 31, 1934, paper; similar articles lauded subsequent birthdays. At age three their daily routines were captured in an anthropological newsreel by the production company Pathegrams, which narrated “A Day at Home” for the Dionne quints; the toddlers were pictured “shining up a gorgeous smile,” “learning rhythm in their own nursery school,” and, in the late afternoon, “tak[ing] a glass of milk.” ....

LILLEY: Being friends with Justin Trudeau appears to pay very well

Article content
A story that started out as just the government giving money to a friendly firm has grown into something much more. Political intrigue, personal relationships, and apparent benefits from being very close to Justin Trudeau.
It turns out that the firm at the centre of a controversy on Parliament Hill hasn’t just been getting taxpayer dollars from federal coffers, they’ve also been paid to help Liberal politicians from the Ontario treasury.

LankaWeb – The Mulliwaikkal divergence

By P.K.Balachandran/Daily Express
Colombo, May 17: The annual ceremonies held by the Sri Lankan armed forces on May 19, to mark the defeat of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the observances held by Tamil political leaders on May 18 to mark what they consider genocide”, keep alive the conflict between Sinhalese and Tamil nationalisms, which have marked post-independence Sri Lankan politics.
This year, to prevent the Tamils from commemorating their dead at Mulliwaikkal (the scene of mass killings at the tail of the 30-year war) the Lankan government has used the COVID-19 pandemic to isolate the place along with the adjacent areas of Mullaitivu, Pudukudiyiruppu, and Mulliyawali. ....
