Bob Caron, pilot in iconic Vietnam War photo, dies in traffic accident

The 26-year-old man driving the car struck by Caron and a 25-year-old woman passenger suffered minor injuries.
The April 29,1975, image captured by United Press International photographer Hubert van Es was among the last pictures sent out of Saigon as the city fell to North Vietnamese forces, effectively ending America s controversial years-long involvement in Vietnam.
But it wasn t until some years later, as the result of investigative work by People magazine which included examination of other photographs taken that day and some expert analysis that it was proved conclusively that van Es had photographed Caron s helicopter.
In an August 2020 interview with the Northwest Florida Daily News, Caron recounted the circumstances surrounding the photograph. He estimated there were 15 people aboard the helicopter when it lifted off the roof of the Pittman Building, home to some of the few Americans remaining in Saigon. ....

CIA: Air America Act of 2021: Recollections of An Air America Pilot

Feb 2021: U.S. Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) reintroduced the
Air America Act of 2021, bipartisan and bicameral legislation that would provide Air America employees federal retirement credit they earned. The legislation, first introduced by Warner and Rubio in July 2020, is identical to an amendment that Sen. Rubio filed to the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, and continues the Senator’s support for these Americans.
“I am proud to cosponsor this bill with Senator Rubio that will provide long-overdue recognition and retirement benefits to the brave men and women who flew for Air America,”
Warner said. “Air Americans were instrumental to the U.S. war effort in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, courageously supporting troops, rescuing downed American pilots and sustaining casualties in the service of their country. Air America was on call until the very end of the war, including flying the last helicopters out of Saigon wher ....

Sen. Marco Rubio reintroduces Air America legislation for former employees

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Sen Marco Rubio, R-Florida, has reintroduced legislation that would recognize employees of Air America a supposedly private air transport company that, in reality, was an instrument of the Central Intelligence Agency  as being eligible for federal retirement benefits.
The legislation was introduced with a Democratic co-sponsor, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, who also co-sponsored Rubio s 2020 legislative effort on behalf of former Air America employees.
The government-owned CIA front company operated from 1950 until 1976, through the Korean War, the Cold War and the Vietnam War, performing a variety of covert missions.
In an August interview with the Daily News, Bob Caron, a former Air America pilot in Vietnam, said the work was very hush-hush, with instructions to pilots and crew members often being little more than go there, meet so-and-so, and do what he tells you. ....
