KENDALLVILLE A police chase in Auburn that ended in an arrest for meth charges among others was the most-read story of the week on kpcnews.com. Michael L. Eck, 28, of the 100 block of South Ivy Lane, Butler, has been charged with dealing methamphetamine, a Level 4 felony; possession of methamphetamine and resisting with a vehicle, both Level 6 felonies; resisting law enforcement and possession of a handgun without a license, both Class A misdemeanors; leaving the scene of a property damage accident, a Class B misdemeanor, and several driving infractions. Auburn Police Capt. Cory Heffelfinger said Auburn Police Cpl. Derek Taylor was attempting to stop Eck for several traffic violations. Eck allegedly refused to stop his 2006 gray Honda Civic after Taylor activated his emergency lights and sirens. ....
Commissioners want to wait on new jail AUBURN â Two out of three DeKalb County Commissioners made it clear Monday that they do not support building a jail right now. During their weekly meeting at the courthouse in Auburn, Bill Hartman and Todd Sanderson said they want to wait until a spike in construction costs subsides. The commissioners have been considering a new jail seriously since January, when they chose the Elevatus architecture firm of Fort Wayne to design a jail on property at the west edge of Auburn. âI think I can make a good decision today. In fact, Iâm not ready to raise taxes to do this,â Hartman said. ....
AVILLA â As Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner stepped into her first room at East Nobleâs preschool at Avilla Elementary, she had the reaction everyone else seems to have â wow. The visit Thursday afternoon started off with business, lots of good questions about how the preschool was set up, what itâs teaching and how itâs helped. But by the time Jenner made it to the last three rooms, each one filled with classes of energetic 4-year-olds, the urge to play became too strong as she mixed it up with the students checking out at the grocery register, visiting the play food truck and working on building projects. ....
ROME CITY â With the 2020-21 school year nearly complete, the East Noble School Corp. is looking ahead to the 2021-22 year. Superintendent Ann Linson updated the school board during Wednesday nightâs meeting on the safety protocols, which will be in place in anticipation of a continuation of the pandemic deeper into 2021. âA lot can change between now and August,â Linson said. âWe are hoping things will be business as usual. To make that happen, we need more people to get the vaccine.â For the most part, the plan presented for in-person learning mirrors the current plan in place. âTo ensure the safety of our students, East Noble School Corp. will follow guidance and mandates provided by the Indiana Department of Health, Noble County Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Education,â Linson advised. ....
