Awami League-led government used the Covid-19 pandemic as a pretext to censor free speech and crack down on critics in Bangladesh, Human Rights Watch said in its World Report 2021 yesterday.
It said the authorities arrested journalists, artists, students, doctors, political opposition members, and activists who spoke out against the government s response to the pandemic, or otherwise criticised the ruling party.
The ruling Awami League showed in 2020 that it will stop at almost nothing to maintain its grip on authoritarian control, even in the face of a global pandemic, said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. ....

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2021 (BSS)- The Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee of the national legal body has disposed 766 cases of helpless and insolvent people at government expense.
The journey of the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee started on September 2015.
The Supreme Court Legal Aid Office took legal action by accepting 1,342 cases by September 2020. Of these, 766 cases have already been settled, said a report published on the website of the Supreme Court.
There are 24 Fast Appeal (FA), 208 Civil Revision, 83 Criminal Appeal, 70 Criminal Revision, 73 Writ Petition, 65 Leave to Appeal and CP Filing and 819 Jail Appeal among the cases received by the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office. ....

Rashed Khan Menon is an important figure in Bangladesh s political history. He was at the frontlines during the mass upsurge in 1969 and the Liberation War in 1971. Currently, he is the president of the Workers Party of Bangladesh. He is also a lawmaker from Dhaka-8 and has previously served as a minister in the Awami League-led government.
