A special court here has ordered the issuance of summons to DMK president M.K. Stalin for his appearance before it on May 6 in connection with two defamation complaints filed on behalf of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar.
The government filed the complaints at the principal sessions court against Mr. Stalin for his comments allegedly defamatory to Mr. Palaniswami and Mr. Jayakumar in connection with the procurement of walkie-talkies.
A government order, dated February 10, said Mr. Stalin made a speech, accusing Mr. Jayakumar of corruption, at Royapuram on January 10. It said he made the speech intentionally against the interest of public good, and it constituted an offence under Section 499 of the IPC. The cases were transferred to the special court for exclusive trial of cases against MPs and MLAs. ....

A federal appeals court judge in Washington used his dissent in a defamation case to call for libel laws to be revised. Circuit Judge Laurence Silberman’s dissent came in a 2-1 decision to throw out a case filed by two Liberian government officials against Global Witness, an environmental and human rights group.
The officials argued that a Global Witness report implied their acceptance of bribes. But the majority opinion said that Global Witness was protected by the “actual malice” precedent of the 1964 Supreme Court decision in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. ....

While condemning the news in a section of media that the YSR Congress Party has been threatening candidates to withdraw in civic polls, Adviser, Public Affaira, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy said the party will not tolerate the false propaganda and will proceed legally by filing defamation cases against those responsible.
Addressing the media at the party central office here on Thursday, Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy said it was not possible to threaten someone to withdraw in elections in the present times where technology was at good use.
He asserted that the results of the panchayat elections would be repeated in the municipal elections, and said the urban body elections would be held for 12 corporations and 75 municipalities of which three corporations and 12 municipalities were unanimous, and the YSRCP would sweep the civic polls are they were being held on party symbol. ....
