Citizen's group calls for exotic animal laws in Ontario amid lion breeding controversy

A citizen s group in the Municipality of Hastings Highlands is calling on the provincial government to create legislation governing the ownership of exotic animals after a controversial roadside zoo began breeding lions in their community.
When the Drysdales left Grand Bend, it marked the end of a bitter 18-month battle between the couple and the local council over the right to house and publicly display exotic animals in a residential neighbourhood. ....

County offers HH support with developing exotic animal bylaw

Hastings Highlands council received a report prepared by CAO/treasurer David Stewart at their meeting on Jan. 20, providing feedback from Hastings County’s Planning and Development Committee on the subject of exotic animals being kept in captivity within the municipality.
Stewart’s report comes in response to a direction from council arising from their Nov. 18 meeting to obtain professional advice and support with the creation of a “county-wide pathway” to deal with the keeping exotic animals.” Within the report, Hastings County’s director of planning and development Justin Harrow addressed the municipality’s request in another report presented to the county’s Planning and Development Committee on Dec. 15. ....

Residents urge council to take action against racism in HH

Hastings Highlands council received a delegation at their Dec. 2 meeting from Reverend Marilyn Zehr and Erin Morlock of the Maynooth-Madawaska Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada. Drawing attention to a hateful act of vandalism which took place in the municipality on Aug. 1, Zehr and Morlock called on council to move forward with a plan of action to deal with racism and discrimination in the community.
Establishing common ground in a shared hope for a more inclusive and healthier community, Zehr pointed out how everyone wants to live in a community where they are safe, and where they feel a sense of belonging. By using phrases in the municipality’s strategic plan such as “We care,” “We are all in this together,” and “Welcome home,” Zehr said council acknowledges the value of this kind of hope in their effort to become an “enviable community where people want to live and work and p ....
