Baseball for Dad postpones scavenger hunt due to COVID-19

May 5, 2021
Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
Baseball for Dad’s Knocking Stigma out of the Park Community Scavenger Hunt had to be postponed recently due to the current provincial lockdown from COVID-19. According to Baseball for Dad’s Louri Snider, this was done at the direction of Hastings Prince Edward Public Health. Snider hopes to reschedule the event for sometime later this summer or in the fall.
Baseball for Dad is a non-profit charity set up in honour of Mark Snider who tragically lost his battle with mental illness, taking his own life in 2019. It was set up in Mark’s honour by his mom Louri, to take the stigma away from mental illness. Since their inception, they’ve come up with a plethora of initiatives like placing baseball gloves around the world (as baseball was Mark’s favourite sport), the Buddy Bench program, their Kindness Moose program and their Moosing Around party rental business. ....

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) says 2020 was a bumper year for gypsy moths, with major pockets in Eastern Ontario. The Ministry’s Forest Health Coordinator Dan Rowlinson says much of the defoliation, where moth larvae strip the trees bare of leaves, has occurred in the areas around Hastings Highlands, North Frontenac and Leeds-Grenville Counties, with pockets appearing in Renfrew County as well. In all, the pest has caused over 600,000 hectares of defoliation in 2020, from Southern Ontario to as far north as Sudbury. ....

HH council directs staff to create exotic animal bylaw | Bancroft this Week

April 27, 2021
By Nate Smelle
With Hastings County developing an exotic animal bylaw template for local municipalities to use; and, both Limerick Township and the Municipality of Highlands East recently passing their own exotic animal bylaws, the pressure is mounting for Hastings Highlands to approve their own bylaw. While council has yet to pass legislation regulating the keeping of exotic animals in the municipality, they did emerge from a closed session meeting on April 21 to announce that they were one step closer to doing so.
After consulting with the municipality’s lawyer during the closed session, council directed staff to produce a draft exotic animal bylaw and present it for a first reading at an upcoming meeting. Although a timeline as to when the bylaw will be presented has yet to be determined, CAO David Stewart said municipal staff will continue to work hard to deliver all of council’s directives in a timely manner. ....

Hastings Highlands directs staff to create exotic animal bylaw
SHARE ON:
With recent moves of exotic animals into the municipality, Hastings Highlands has begun the process to regulate them.
In the last council meeting, staff was directed to create an exotic animal bylaw that will be presented to council at a later date. The municipality appears to have sought a legal opinion during a closed-door session, with the motion being voted on in an open session. The decision was passed unanimously.
Exotic animals have been a hot-button topic since last November, when Mark and Tammy Drysdale brought their animals, mainly large cats, to Hastings Highlands from Lambton Shores after a dispute with that municipality. The Drysdales maintain that their animals are domesticated and what they do is legal. Earlier this month, Hastings County requested the provincial and federal government to pass legislation around exotic animals. However, the Municipality of Highlands East impleme ....
