Hasty Pudding Theatricals honored Viola Davis as its Woman of the Year Thursday night, sans the usual fanfare.
The burlesque musical comedy group typically celebrates the honoree for her impressive contributions to the entertainment industry with an in-person roast and parade through Harvard Square. (Elizabeth Banks took home the pudding pot last year.) But the ceremony for Davis, adapted to pandemic-era restrictions, was held over Zoom with the Hasty Pudding company, alumni, and patrons in the virtual audience. ....

Academy Award-winning Actress Viola Davis, a New England native, was named the Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ 2021 Woman of the Year last week.
The Hasty Pudding Theatricals, a Harvard University theater troupe and the oldest theatrical organization in the United States, announced last Friday it will be presenting the annual award to Davis, who is known for breaking ground in Hollywood, most recently as the most Oscar-nominated Black actress in Academy Awards history. ....

Viola Davis is Harvard's newest Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year

“Viola has inspired our company with her incredible grit and determination, and we cannot wait to celebrate her successes, strong character and wonderful talent,” said Jessica Moore, the group’s president, in a statement.
Davis is scheduled to be honored April 22 in an online ceremony that will include a roast, a discussion and a speech from Davis as she is presented with her ceremonial pudding pot. Because of the pandemic, the event will not include its traditional parade through the streets of Cambridge.
“We’re very excited to honor Viola Davis as our 71st Woman of the Year because of her immense impact in Hollywood, especially in such a historic and difficult year for the arts,” said Natalie Needle, the event coordinator and producer. ....
