MANILA (AFP) – Rodzon Enriquez’s skeletal remains are pulled out of a coffin-sized tomb in Manila and placed in a body bag. Five years after the 21-year-old was killed in the Philippines’ drug war, the lease on his grave is expiring.
Activists estimate tens of thousands of people have died since Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte ordered police to go after drug addicts and dealers in a widely-condemned campaign that has largely targetted poor men.
Many of the dead were put in “apartment” tombs stacked metres high in jam-packed cemeteries across the sprawling capital, where a five-year lease on a rectangular concrete box costs about PHP5,000 (USD100). ....

The District had seen warning signs prior to 2-year-old Gabriel Eason’s death. But after suffering months of abuse at home, in April 2020 Gabriel died from what medical examiners determined was significant head and abdominal trauma while under the care of his mother, Ta’Jeanna Eason, and her boyfriend Antonio Turner.
On October 9, 2019, a child care center called the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) abuse hotline to report that 2-year-old Gabriel had an unexplained injury, according to an affidavit provided to the D.C. Superior Court by the Metropolitan Police Department. MPD investigators visited the Northeast home Eason and Turner shared, but by March 2020 investigators had not found enough evidence to prove or disprove the allegation of abuse, according to the affidavit. They closed the case. ....

EAST LIVERPOOL Vaccination appears to work, East Liverpool schools Superintendent Jonathan Ludwig explained during Thursday’s virtual meeting of the district’s school board.
“Our COVID numbers have decreased significantly over the past two weeks. We continue to follow all safety protocols included in the reset and restart plan approved by the board. Students who wish to make a change to virtual or in-person learning for the fourth nine weeks can do so by calling the school counselors,” he explained to members during his report.
On March 12, members of the East Liverpool Health Department area scheduled to administer the second dose of the COVID vaccine as the district continues to move forward. ....
