Iowa man who used child as shield during police standoff sentenced

A man who police said used a child as a shield during a brief standoff with authorities was sentenced last week to two years in prison for child endangerment.  Lewis Deshawn Butts, 32, of Des Moines was in a home in the 2800 block of Southeast 8th Court around 11 p.m. March 3 when Des Moines police officers received a report of a domestic disturbance there, according to a criminal complaint. Officers forced their way into the home and had their guns drawn when they encountered Butts, who pulled a child in front of him, according to the complaint. He eventually let the child go and complied with officers commands, according to the complaint. The child was not injured.

Self is accused of intentionally driving his car into the Surf & Turf Restaurant in Bessemer City, killing two of his family members, and injuring several others, on May 20, 2018. Investigators said Self was having lunch with his family when he got up, went to his car and drove it into the building. His daughter Katelyn Self and his daughter-in-law died. Self was charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
