ALBEMARLE CO., Va. (WVIR) - Thursday, Albemarle County Public Schools formally approved a five-day in-person schedule for the next school year.
The plan follows state law that requires school districts to offer a fully in-person option.
The school board voted unanimously to approve the plan.
ACPS will also continue an all-virtual school option through a one-year pilot program. That program will be five days of virtual learning from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and would require an additional 40+ teachers and a principal to be hired. ....

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Virginia’s teachers will soon be evaluated by a new standard: cultural competency. It’s something that Albemarle County Public Schools has required for years.
Albemarle County Public Schools began its culturally responsive teaching certification in 2016. Teachers and administrators say students attitudes toward learning and success in the classroom have both seen major improvements.
“Culturally responsive teaching is about a mindset shift,” Albemarle High School Media Center Director and Former Teacher Monica Laux explained. ....

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County Public Schools is finalizing summer school plans as more students than ever are expected to participate.
Schools will provide academic assistance in the morning to students who need to catch up on learning and build skills that may have fallen behind during the coronavirus pandemic. The afternoons will be centered on some of the programs schools offer that were more difficult to convey in the online environment.
“The part I think is really exciting and innovating is the afternoon programming,” ACPS Superintendent Matt Haas said. “It will be provided by our local, in some case statewide providers. Specialty programming around physical activity, leadership, and social and emotional wellbeing for those students.” ....

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County is adopting Emergency Ordinance 21-E(1), relaxing previous occupancy restrictions to better align with the Executive Order 72 and Virginia’s Phase 3 guidelines.
The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt the order Wednesday, April 7..
Restaurants, bars, wineries, and distilleries can now have 50 people inside and 100 people outside. Gatherings can also have 50 people inside and 100 people outside. Gatherings are not bound to distancing guidelines.
“The big difference is if you’re at a gathering you can all stay intermingled. If you are parties that cumulatively total 50 people indoors or 100 people outdoors, you must maintain a minimum of 6 feet difference between your party and your table and another part ....
