Demolition on the building began last week in preparation for a single story office building to be constructed and leased to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The former high school’s gymnasium will become the new home for the Alpena Boys and Girls Club. ALPENA The COVID-19 pandemic was expected to throw a monkey wrench in local development. Thus far however, it has had little impact on projects planned before the pandemic and developers are considering future projects in the area. ....

ALPENA A discovery excited workers tearing apart the outer walls of the former Catholic Central High School campus in north Alpena last week. An oxidized metal box, tucked inside a cement cornerstone, is a time capsule, placed when the school was built in 1950, developer Bruce Dietz believes. The box isn’t locked, but Dietz hasn’t looked inside. “It’s a community thing,” Dietz said. “It’s got more significance to the community than to me personally. I don’t want to ruin it.” ....

Only time and COVID-19 will determine if that will happen. Already, several 2021 events are scrapped, and others changed to virtual methods as the pandemic and related restrictions continue. ....
[email protected] ALPENA The Thunder Bay Folk Society has received a $3,800 grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to help fund the 2021 Thunder Bay Folk Fest. The 7th Annual Festival will take place Sept. 24-26, 2021 at the Alpena Antique Tractor Showgrounds on French Road in Alpena. “It’ll be used to pay the musicians,” said Bonnie Bartz, TBFS board member. In past years, the festival has had over 100 musicians and about 12 vendors, she said. Last year’s folk festival had to be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was heartbreaking,” Bartz said of canceling the festival in 2020. “We didn’t make the decision until July, but that’s when it became evident that it wasn’t going to happen.” ....

The Alpena Boys and Girls Club has received a food/activity grant from Banner Realty. The Club’s mission is “To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.” In celebration of 30 years in business, Banner Realty, Margie Haaxma, Broker, is providing a grant that will assist in the need for delivered meals and resources. In 2020 there were over 18,000 meals and food resources supplied to individuals and families through the Alpena Club. The Club incurs a large expense each year to supplement the food program to over 1,200 youth and their families with both on-site and mobile meals.
