DRIVE-THROUGHS, MAJOR STREETS COLLIDE: One of the lesser-known complications of COVID-19 is apparently drive-through-itis and the resulting traffic congestion it causes.
Last week, Laurence DiCola followed up on an email from early in the pandemic on the awful traffic pattern at Petroglyph Plaza on Golf Course Road just south of Paseo del Norte. He writes, “The number of accidents going in and out of this shopping center continues to grow. Three vehicles ploughed into each other (the first weekend in April). It is a common occurrence. The Starbucks drive-through causes backups out of the entrance onto Golf Course. And the traffic flow within the parking lot of this plaza sees multiple fender-benders weekly. The city really needs to investigate what needs to be done to alleviate the traffic congestion and traffic patterns at this plaza.” ....

CAN WE GET SOME I-25 REPAIRS? That request comes from Tom, who says in an email, “The state spent mega-dollars expanding southbound I-25 in the Jefferson/Montgomery area two years ago. The company that laid the asphalt ought to be sued. The road is a total mess. The section just south of Montgomery is equally bad. Every time I prepare to exit at Montgomery, one of my teeth fillings falls out.
“Adding to the misery of the condition of this freeway are the potholes and deteriorating roadway just north of the Alameda exit,” Tom adds. “The state appears to be ready to work on the left side, lane one, of I-25 in the area of Paseo del Norte. That section isn’t too bad. How do we get the state to work on the really bad sections?” ....

WHAT’S WITH SUNPORT’S UNUSABLE LANES AND SIGNALS? Doug Stack of Belen emails, “I am wondering why the Sunport Road now has new lanes that can’t be used and the flashing traffic lights? Why was this money spent? Will the traffic lights function even? Why was the turnaround put in and blocked off at the end of Sunport?”
Because work on the project is in its very early stages.
Amor Solano of Bernalillo County’s Operations and Maintenance Department says, “We are in the process of building an off-ramp to connect to Broadway.”
And engineering manager Rodrigo L. Eichwald goes further, explaining “it was done as the first phase of the Sunport Boulevard Extension Project. Those are the improvements that are needed for when Sunport is extended down to Broadway. The project should be let out for bids in the next month, and construction should follow a couple of months ....

WESTSIDE GOING FOUR LANES IN 2021:
Randall Sever asks by email, “Has there been any consideration of improving Westside Boulevard between Golf Course Road and N.M. 528? I understand this is Sandoval/Bernalillo, Rio Rancho/Albuquerque owned/maintained, but it is a busy thoroughfare throughout the day and a bottleneck often. … Will this ever get improved by expanding to four lanes?”
And L. Thornburg emails, “Several years ago I saw signs on Westside regarding upcoming work to, at last, complete expansion to four lanes from just west of N.M. 528 to Golf Course. That has never happened, and we all still play ‘ace out’ to keep the left-lane line jumpers from getting in front when traveling east on Westside at Golf Course – because nobody really believes the zipper (merge) works in Albuquerque. ....
