World-renowned composer and teacher Martin Boykan dies at age 89

.- Martin Boykan, a world-renowned composer, inspirational teacher, published author and prodigious performer, died peacefully at his home on March 6, 2021 at the age of 89. He leaves behind his wife, Susan Schwalb, and his niece Ina Pour El and her family. His funeral took place in New York City on March 8, 2021.
Born in 1931, Boykan studied composition with Walter Piston, Aaron Copland and Paul Hindemith, and piano with Eduard Steuermann. He received a BA from Harvard University, 1951, and an MM from Yale University, 1953. In 1953–55 he was in Vienna on a Fulbright Fellowship, and upon his return founded the Brandeis Chamber Ensemble whose other members included Robert Koff (Juilliard Quartet), Nancy Cirillo (Wellesley), Eugene Lehner (Kolisch Quartet) and Madeline Foley (Marlborough F ....

Drumroll, please… the 2021 winning composition is “Everything Already Lost”
Composer 
Jeffrey Ryan has won first prize in the National Association of Teachers of Singing 2021 Art Song Composition Award for his work,
“Everything Already Lost.” As first prize winner, Ryan will receive $2,000 and the work will be performed at the 57th NATS National Conference, which is slated for July 2022 in Chicago. Additionally, the Cincinnati Song Initiative also will program the work on a future concert as part of its Americana series.
Ryan’s “Everything Already Lost” is an art song cycle for baritone and piano featuring the poetry of Jan Zwicky. The cycle premiered November 19, 2020, in a virtual concert by Music on Main and recorded at Chan Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, with Tyler Duncan, baritone and Erika Switzer, piano. Anya Pogorelova is a pianist, percussionist, and music educator originally from Saratov, Russia. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting at UMKC Conservatory. Anya holds a Master of Music in Conducting from Georgia State University, where she studied with Robert J. Ambrose and Chester B. Phillips; and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with high honours from the University of Saskatchewan.
Prior to studying at UMKC, Anya was the Director of Bands at Bishop Lloyd Middle School in Lloydminster, Alberta. In that position, Anya worked with over 300 students across 4 concert bands, 2 jazz ensembles, and drumline. While at Georgia State University, Anya served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, and Concert Band; taught basic and instrumental conducting courses; and assisted with the 225-member marching band.
