Crime by Bianca Hrovat Premium Content  The scourge of domestic violence is worsening across the state as statistics from the Queensland Courts reveal frightening increases in domestic violence orders (DVOs) made. More than 38,000 DVOs have been made by the Queensland Courts over the last year, the majority of which were lodged at Southport, Beenleigh and Brisbane. Women are, more often than not, the victims of domestic violence in Queensland, representing 77 per cent of those who require court protection. The orders can include conditions that limit or ban contact between the defendant and the aggrieved, prevent the defendant from coming within a a certain distance of the aggrieved, and order the defendant to be of good behaviour to the aggrieved, among other things. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only THE Ipswich Knights have received some welcome news as they prepare to maintain their recent Friday night record at Bundamba. Skilful attacking midfielder Mitch Herrmann has been cleared of an ankle fracture meaning he can return to training and hopefully be back on the field soon. That comes after initial fears he could be out for an extended period after suffering the injury in the Knights season-opening victory over Mitchelton. Here s an initial selection of the so far fairly evenly split correspondence we ve received: I m also pretty much over domestic travel stories. Fancy an alarm clock, hair dryer or coffee grinder going off from 6am, multiple times a day, every day? That is the level of noise experienced in many suburbs since new flight paths came into effect following the opening of Brisbane s second runway last July. Airservices Australia s online Webtrak site shows noise levels have shot up at a dozen monitoring sites from Nudgee in the east, to Bardon in the west and south as far as Salisbury. Webtrak showed some of the stations routinely record noise levels above 70 decibels (dB) in the morning on April 20, for example - equivalent to a washing machine. ....
And it is not over yet, with Short swimming in the 1500m and a white hot field assembled for the 100m freestyle sprint. Hold onto your hats for that one. But for now, we recognise our top 10 performers, the Best of the Rest and try and mention all other Queenslanders who snared podium finishers. All Hallows and Newmarket Racers product Elizabeth Dekkers is closer to Olympic selection. Photo Steve Pohlner ELIZABETH DEKKERS The All Hallows School student from Newmarket Racers edged closer to the Tokyo Olympics with a stunning 16 years 200m butterfly effort of 2.07.82, breaking her own Australian record in the 16 years age group as well as an Australian All comers record. That time would place her on the cusp of Olympic Games selection if she repeats at either the Australian titles or the Olympic trials. Last night she also won the 100m butterfly and was third in the 200m IM. ....
