My parents both came from Quaker backgrounds and were married in the Quaker tradition – a simple ceremony at home without clergy.
Although we were not brought up as Quakers, we were steeped in Quaker traditions – including the savage persecution of the Friends, as they prefer to be called, by the 17th Century Puritans at Salem.
One of our ancestors, Provided Southwick, was reportedly sold into slavery by Governor Endicott, but escaped that fate when no ship captain could be found to carry her away to the Caribbean slave marts. John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker, celebrated that event in a dramatic poem, “Cassandra Southwick,” which we all read and memorized.  ....

Al Southwick: The legend Charley Parkhurst, Worcester's one-eyed stagecoach driving woman

Al Southwick: The legend Charley Parkhurst, Worcester s one-eyed stagecoach driving woman
Al Southwick
Worcester has hosted a number of colorful characters over the years. One of them was Charley Parkhurst, deserving of some notice from the women’s rights brigade. Old Charley was one tough old stagecoach driver, expert in guiding loaded wagons through rugged mountain trails.
Charley was also female, a fact discovered after her death.
Born about 1812, perhaps in Worcester, perhaps in New Hampshire, Charley, maybe a runaway from an orphanage, apparently was drawn to horses and the livery business at an early age. Charley was hired by Ebenezer Balch’s livery stables in Worcester in the 1830s and moved with Balch to Providence a few years later. ....

Al Southwick: Phineas Gage's hole in the head

Al Southwick: Phineas Gage s hole in the head
Al Southwick
A recent TV program on research on the human brain brought to mind the name of Phineas Gage. Phineas Gage was famous 150 years ago because he had a hole in his head through which observers could see his gray, living brain. He lived for years with that anomaly.
He was an expert on blasting, and on Sept. 13, 1848, he was working with a construction gang on a new line for the Rutland and Burlington Railroad in Vermont. He had just drilled the holes for the blasting powder and had started to temp the holes when his crowbar set off a spark. The ensuing explosion drove an iron bar through his head, ripping a piece of his skull away. The bloody remnant was picked up by one of the workers some distance away. ....

Earlier this year Elon Musk generated worldwide attention when his SpaceX rocket successfully rendezvoused with the International Space Station. A few months after that, Musk garnered more headlines by announcing his intention to relocate his operations from California to Texas.
All I could think was, “Why not Worcester, Massachusetts?”
The first connection that comes to mind is Robert Goddard, one of the founders of modern rocketry. In 1926, he became the first person to launch a liquid-fueled rocket – a milestone. He held 214 patents. His widow would later successfully sue the U.S. government for the unauthorized use of some of these patents for $1,000,000. ....
