COURTS have come to occupy a distinctively unique place in modern states given their multifarious but quintessential roles not only in the development of jurisprudence and adjudication of disputes but also in determining the questions that have a considerable bearing on such diverse areas as fundamental rights, economic efficiency, environmental protection, treaty enforcement, electoral transparency, and in extreme cases, even resolution of political disputes. Hence, the selection of the superior judiciary has become an arduous if not a highly contentious issue, involving competence, integrity, belief, affiliation, background, etc.

Bar council observes black day today - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council announced to observe black day and strike on Tuesday (today) against multiple issues including expected elevation of a judge of Sindh High Court, who is firth in the seniority list, to Supreme Court and filing of a review petition by the government in Justice Qazi Faez Isa case.
An emergency meeting of the council was held here that was attended by its vice chairman Naeemuddin Khan, its executive committee chairman Haji Zafar Iqbal and other members. The council decided to observe black day, asking lawyers across the province not to attend court proceedings.
The participants of the meeting said that legal fraternity would not remain silent over different unconstitutional moves by the government. ....

GILGIT: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed has said the people of Gilgit-Baltistan enjoy equal rights as enshrined in the country’s constitution.

Islamabad [Pakistan], May 17 (ANI): After the retirement of two PakistanSupreme Court judges, there has been a noticeable delay in filling up their vacant positions in the court, and this has resulted in eyebrows being raised the country.
According to The Express Tribune, PakistanSupreme Court judges Faisal Arab and Manzoor Malik retired on November 4, 2020, and April 30 this year respectively. However, despite an ever-growing caseload, two vacant positions in the Supreme Court have not yet been filled.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Secretary Ahmed Farooq Rana claimed that the reason for this delay in filling the vacant SC posts is internal differences. But the common man is suffering because of these rifts, he added. ....
