National Theatre shelves European touring after Brexit

The National Theatre has said uncertainty over obtaining visas and work permits in mainland Europe has led it to shelve plans to tour there.
We are currently not able to confirm any touring commitments in Europe as a result of Brexit legislation, it said.
UK actors, musicians and crews can t work freely across the continent following the departure from the EU.
On Tuesday the government said it hopes to open negotiations with individual EU countries to help British artists tour. ....

Deborah Annetts, chief executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, spelt out the urgency in fixing the deal for artists.
She said touring musicians are thinking in quite desperate terms about whether they can continue in the industry with post-Brexit travel rules.
The sector leader called on Culture Minister Caroline Dinenage negotiate with European capitals to put in place a visa waiver agreement .
Earlier this month Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden accused the EU of being absurd and self-defeating by rejecting an offer made by the UK in trade talks to secure visas for touring artists. ....

MPs are set to question Digital and Culture Minister Caroline Dinenage over the government’s handling of Brexit negotiations which failed to achieve visa-free touring for UK artists and crew.

However, Dinenage said that visa-free travel was “not consistent with Brexit” and failed to explicitly address how the above matters would be solved, but said working groups had been set up and that the industry would be helped to understand and “navigate the changes”. ....
