The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has no current plans to extend its Covid-19 financial support for councils beyond June, its permanent secretary has said. Jeremy Pocklington confirmed to the Commons housing, communities and local government committee yesterday that the ministry had provided £1.55bn for councils in unringfenced Covid grants for 2021-22 and extended the sales, fees and charges income compensation scheme to the end of June. “We re also continuing to fund some other priorities, including our support for rough sleepers,” he added. “We haven t got any plans to extend our support beyond this quarter,” said Mr Pocklington. “But it is obviously something that we will need to keep under a continuous review through this financial year. ....
Luton BC has indicated it would be highly resistant to selling Luton Airport to help shore up its finances after receiving £35m in emergency support from the government. The Labour-controlled council said the airport, which it owns through a subsidiary company, was vital to the town’s economy and that its community benefits would be “put at risk in private hands”. So far, four councils – Luton BC, Bexley LBC, Peterborough City Council and Eastbourne BC – have been promised a total of £96m by the end of 2021-22 through capitalisation directions, which allow them to borrow money to spend on day to day services. ....

Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust is developing the section into 90 new homes, 30 are now complete with a further 60 expected to be complete by June. When complete there will be 70 one-bedroom homes, 14 two-bedroom homes, three three-bedrooms and three four-bedroom homes. ....
