At a remote meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, the Vermont Board of Libraries will be resuming a public hearing on renaming it Susanna Toby Brook, after an early Black settler and longtime resident of Townshend who died in 1855 and whose husband fought in the Revolutionary War in place of his slaveholderâs son. But during a recent hearing with the state board in charge of considering name changes to natural areas, not everyone agreed the current name was problematic. The Rename Negro Brook Alliance has been working for more than a year, doing research, gathering signatures, and getting ready to make their case before the seven-member Vermont Board of Libraries.
