Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools (MVPS) is hiring Hope MacLeod as the sole director of student support services a change made by the All-Island School Committee at their meeting Thursday. Originally, MacLeod served as co-director, and was in charge of student support services for grades 8-12, while co-director Nancy Dugan was tasked with students in grades K-7. But now Dugan is eyeing retirement at the beginning of July, and the school system has decided to revert back to a single-director model moving forward. ....
The all-Island school committee discussed ways to expand racial and social justice learning in the Martha’s Vineyard public school system Thursday, adding diversity training, anti-racist curriculums and racial literacy programs to the agenda for the new year. Plans for expanding diversity programs at the schools have been a topic of discussion at a handful of school committee meetings in the past year, but the conversation took a formal step forward Thursday, when Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition a community-based organization focused on eradicating racism on the Island came before the school committee to share its work. In the fifth draft of the budget, UIRSD committee chair Alex Salop said the line items in both the general operating budget and the assessed budget had been carefully combed through by school officials, and all were deemed to be “absolutely necessary” in order to continue providing the expected level of service to students. “We largely trust our school heads and principals to make the right decisions on what is needed on a line item basis,” Salop said. ....
