The second Major League Soccer match in 2021 for the Black & Gold ended 0-0 against CF Montreal with the “hosts” outshooting the Crew 20-3 in another poor offensive showing. Here is what we learned in a rather lethargic and unexciting scoreless draw in Fort Lauderdale. Defensive depth is strong The Crew’s depth has been tested early with a congested schedule and a handful of early-season injuries. While the offense hasn’t clicked at the level expected, the defensive performances have carried over from last year immediately in league play with another new combination of defenders. ....

Perhaps the biggest headline of the Black & Gold’s offseason, however, was the signing of 21-year-old Romanian winger Alexandru Matan for a reported $1.8 million. While the former three are known around American soccer circles, little was known about Matan. Friday afternoon, he spoke with the media to introduce himself and how he found his way to Columbus. This came a little less than a week after he made his debut in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against the Philadelphia Union. Matan played six minutes and his first touch was met with a hard tackle from Alejandro Bedoya. ....
