Grief, anger, frustration and cynicism are colliding in personal and public space and the convergence has left millions afraid and alone, fearful and lonesome. The vignettes of angst and anxiety streaming onto mobile devices are vivid.
The magnitude of the surge and the resultant crisis is manifest in the data and the images. On Friday, India recorded 2,34,692 cases and 1341 fatalities that is 162 cases every minute and a death nearly every minute. To get a sense of the surge consider this: In just 60 days, the count of active cases has shot over ten times from 1.38 lakh to 16.7 lakh between February 16 ....

In the documentary "Stray," dogs are "walking emblems of resistance against capitalism"

comments
Turkey has a no kill, no capture law towards all its stray animals, including the 100,000 dogs that roam the streets of Istanbul. From 2017 to 2019, documentarian Elizabeth Lo focused her lens on three Zeytin, Nazar and Kartal and, with a quiet compassion, assesses what their lives say about the human condition and how we treat each other in her new film Stray.
According to Lo, due to the dogs inherently transient lives, in the course of the film they would encounter all sorts, whether it was women who were protesting for their rights on the streets or the refugees from Syria who were trying to make a living in Istanbul – a country that s not their own – or musicians busking on the side of the street. The young men from Syria in particular are intent on integrating their lives alongside their canine counterparts . ....

When a Museum Feels Like Home

Cartoon by Karen Sneider
About Titian, what can be said after you say that he is the finest pure painter ever? Susanna Kaysen, the author of “Girl, Interrupted,” surmises that the subject of “Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap” (circa 1510) “looks to the left, into the past.” Reading that, I see it. The other Titian portrait is of the artist’s best friend and tireless promoter, Pietro Aretino poet, connoisseur, power broker, feared satirist, author of popular devotional literature and pornography, intimate of rulers including the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and altogether one of the most interesting men of the sixteenth century. (I’m acquainted with Aretino from a bounteous 2012 biography, “Titian: His Life,” by Sheila Hale.) Turning to the Bellini (circa 1476-1478), we behold St. Francis standing outside his cave in a rustic landscape with meadowed sheep nearby and mountains and noble buildings in the distance. He looks skyward and holds out his open hands i ....

Read what Jenny Saville, George Condo and Victoria Beckham have to say about their favourite Old Master paintings

Sixty-two cultural figures have contributed a text about their favourite work of art in the Frick Collection for a new publication,
The Sleeve Should Be Illegal & Other Reflections on Art at the Frick. The book, published this month, was brought together in part to mark last year’s 85th anniversary of the much-loved New York museum, which houses the Old Masters collection amassed by the 19th-century industrialist Henry Clay Frick.
The publication takes its title from one of the texts written by the US novelist Jonathan Lethem, who describes the sumptuous sleeve of Sir Thomas More, depicted in Hans Holbein the Younger’s 1527 portrait, as “ecstasy, the sleeve should be illegal, the sleeve was Utopia”. ....
