One year later: Philadelphia commemorates George Floyd's legacy

George Floyd should be alive with his family today and it’s incumbent on all of us to keep his memory alive, Mayor Jim Kenney said, according to CBS3. His death represented the countless Black Americans tragically killed by police, and it catalyzed a long overdue reckoning about systemic racism in this country. This week, I urge all Philadelphians to reflect on the tremendous legacy he leaves behind and on how we can continue to work together to enact police reform and dismantle institutional racism.
Boathouse Row, the FMC tower, Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field, the Wells Fargo Center and other buildings will be lit up in gold to honor Floyd and all victims of police brutality Tuesday evening. ....

Tuesday marks one year since George Floyd was murdered by former police officer Derek Chauvin.
In an effort to pay tribute to Floyd and other victims of police violence, elected officials and community partners are planning a series of memorial activities.
“George Floyd should be alive with his family today and it’s incumbent on all of us to keep his memory alive,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. “His death represented the countless Black Americans tragically killed by police, and it catalyzed a long overdue reckoning about systemic racism in this country.” ....

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) Organizers of menorah lighting ceremonies across Philadelphia have moved their programs online due to the pandemic.
Decorations were set up early with the menorah in place in the courtyard of the Betsy Ross House in Old City, but the courtyard won t be nearly as crowded this year for the menorah lighting ceremony Thursday night.
I always say better safe than sorry. It s always important that safety comes first, said Rabbi Zalman Wircberg, of the Old City Jewish Arts Center.
They re going virtual this year with only a few invited guests allowed in the courtyard. ....
