Rivers Park in Chicopee to be closed until June for $900,000 in improvements

CHICOPEE – Rivers Park has been closed for a two-month construction project and is expected to reopen in June with new walkways and an improved pool and spray park.
The entire project is estimated to cost $921,500 and the city received a $400,000 Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities grant from the state Executive Office of Environmental Affairs in 2019 to help fund the renovations, according to city records.

The issue of what to do with the Scituate Harbor Community Building, also known as the the former Pier 44 building, was addressed at the Jan. 19 Select Board meeting.
The waterfront property located at the harbor has been in limbo for years.
Purchased with MBTA mitigation funds for the Greenbush line, the property is confined by specific restrictions, which limits how it can be used.
Legalities
“The town needs to be aware that the property was purchased with MBTA mitigation funds for the Greenbush Line. Whatever is done at the site is restricted to public purpose of open space and land preservation for outdoor recreation by and education of the general public,” Town Administrator Jim Boudreau said.
