Air Force employee pleads guilty in $1.1 million theft of government travel advances

A former Air Force employee who coordinated travel for members of Congress has pleaded guilty in federal court to the theft of Pentagon funds through cash advances on his government-issued travel card as part of a $1.1 million embezzlement scheme.
Eddie Ray Johnson Jr., 60, of Brandywine, Md., used his Citibank travel card over more than three years to put cash advances into a Bank of America account at the Pentagon, court documents said. The scheme cost the Air Force $26,500 in banking and service fees, they said.
Under a plea deal on May 14, Johnson admitted to diverting at least $774,000 of the stolen funds for personal use, such as buying a baby grand piano, making loan payments for a Harley Davidson and taking family vacations. ....

Eddie Ray Johnson, Jr., age 60, of Brandywine, Maryland, pleaded guilty on May 14, 2021, to the federal charge of theft of government property, in connection with a scheme to use his government-issued travel credit card to obtain more than $1.1 million in cash advances.
The guilty plea was announced by Acting United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Jonathan F. Lenzner; Brigadier General Terry Bullard of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI); Special Agent in Charge Christopher Dillard of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Mid-Atlantic Field Office; and Acting Special Agent in Charge Darrell J. Former POW Ralph Galati will address his fellow Vietnam veterans in a ceremony at 2 p.m. March 27 at the Kent County Veterans Memorial Park, 760 S. Little Creek Road, Dover.
We are truly honored and look forward to welcoming Ralph Galati as a fellow veteran and hero who suffered for our freedoms, said Joe Startt Jr., president of Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America.
Born and raised in Philadelphia and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Galati was a 1966 graduate of St. James High School in Chester, Pennsylvania, and received his Bachelor of Science from St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, in 1970 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He earned his wings as a weapon systems officer in the F-4 Phantom and was assigned to Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand where he served as a forward air controller. ....
