International Aluminium Institute: Post-consumer Aluminium Scrap Tops 20 Million Tonnes for the First Time
Says recycled aluminium could meet 50 per cent of demand by 2050
The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) has today released new data revealing a record 20 million tonnes of post-consumer scrap intake in 2019. This avoids 300 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions as the recycled metal reduces demand for primary aluminium.

The International Aluminum Institute published a report outlining how the aluminum industry can reduce its emissions.
Manufacturers of metals are increasingly under pressure to modernize their production processes and make them “greener.”
In recent coverage, MetalMiner’s Stuart Burns has touched on China’s latest Five-Year Plan and its environmental implications for the country’s massive steel and aluminum sectors. Producers in Europe, meanwhile, have argued the continent’s stricter environmental standards and regulations put it at a competitive disadvantage.
On the other hand, decarbonizing and becoming “greener” is also becoming more and more of a branding opportunity.
“Rusal is at the forefront of promoting its primary metal as coming wholly from renewable (hydroelectric) sources,” Burns wrote last September. “European metals producers may not have such a clear advantage in terms of power supply.” ....

Global aluminum needs up to $1.5 trillion investment to decarbonize energy supplies: IAI
Investments of between $500 billion and $1.5 trillion may be needed to decarbonize energy supplies to the electro-intensive global aluminum industry if the sector is to meet its decarbonization targets by 2050, according to executives of the International Aluminium Institute, a producers’ association.
Much of this cost will be concentrated in China, which has grown over the past 20 years to account for around 55% of the world’s aluminum production and demand, and which currently uses predominantly coal-based energy for aluminum production.
“However, we already see the movement there [in China]”, said IAI Deputy Secretary General Chris Bayliss in a call with reporters to mark the March 16 launch of the institute’s Aluminium Sector Greenhouse Gas Pathways to 2050 report. “The move back to growth of hydropower [to fuel the aluminum industry] is happening there.” ....

Entitled ‘Aluminium Sector Greenhouse Gas Pathways to 2050’, the new report from the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) is designed to help the sector front-load decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement in the coming decades, aiming beyond 2C and towards 1.5C. The sector is notably accountable for 2% of annual global man-made emissions and is set to grow by 50% by 2050, in line with increased demands for digital products and things like electric vehicles (EVs). ....
