The 35-year-old maple, located opposite the Day-Today store, suffered damage to its trunk, which split in half. It tilted over and its branches became entangled in an adjacent tree. The damaged tree was initially spotted by local resident Anne Reuter on Thursday February 25. She in turn told Avril Nisbet, another local resident, who was out walking her dog. Mrs Nisbet informed her father Alister Hadden, chairman of Wallyford Community Council. He alerted Mike Foy, tree officer with East Lothian Council, and Stuart Baxter, manager of Musselburgh Area Partnership, who mustered a team into action to deal with the broken tree. It was taken down and made safe by the council’s forestry squad within hours of the damage being reported. ....
WALLYFORD Gala Queen Grace Harneman and Gala King Jamie Lawson had the honour of officially switching on the Christmas lights in the village last Friday evening. In keeping with Government guidance and restrictions, the ceremony took place at the Christmas tree next to the Wallyford Mining Memorial Stone at the St Clement’s housing estate. A floral tribute was laid at the mining memorial stone by Stuart Baxter, manager of Musselburgh Area Partnership, in remembrance of the 38 miners who lost their lives in Wallyford collieries from 1857 to 1924. A short pause of silence was also observed. Mr Baxter also presented Grace and Jamie with a gift from Wallyford Community Council, which organises the Christmas lights switch-on. ....
