KCK school board approves seven assistant principal positions
The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education voted today to approve seven assistant principal positions at middle schools and high schools.
The vote was unanimous, 6-0, to approve the positions. The board met in an online meeting that began at 3 p.m., and discussed several budget issues.
The board also approved an expanded position, associate superintendent of teaching and learning, on a 5-1 vote. It is an existing position that is being upgraded, Dr. Alicia Miguel, interim superintendent, said.
She said they are bringing all areas of instruction, including curriculum and instruction, Diploma Plus, instructional learning officers and special education, under this associate superintendent. The change will allow the district to expand support and supervision, bringing them under one person, she said. ....

TOPEKA, Kan. It s been a year since Gov. Laura Kelly ordered all schools online as the COVID-19 pandemic surged through Kansas. More than 80% of K-12 schools in the state have brought students back to classrooms full time or are preparing to by the end of the month.

The Kansas City, Kansas Public School District hopes this week to give 1,000 district employees the COVID-19 vaccine.
The district is working with the Wyandotte County Health Department to get shots into the arms of teachers and staff.
Phase 2 of the Kansas vaccine distribution plan includes essential workers.
K-12 teachers, custodians, drivers and other district staff are part of that group.
“The goal for me is that we get everyone who wants the vaccine, a vaccine administered to them,” KCKPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Alicia Miguel said.
About half of KCKPS employees indicated in a survey they would be interested in receiving the vaccine, a district spokesperson told 41 Action News. ....

KCK school board gives OK to wrestling – Welcome to Wyandotte Daily!


The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education on Tuesday night approved a proposal to let wrestling restart.
The proposal presented by Tammie Romstad, the district’s director of athletics, will allow wrestling practices and competitions to start on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Voting to allow wrestling to start again were Yolanda Clark, Maxine Drew, Randy Lopez and Stacy Yeager. Voting no on starting wrestling were Janey Humphries, Wanda Brownlee Paige and Valdenia Winn.
“I do not feel comfortable having children wrestling,” Humphries said. “That is too close a contact for me. We want people to wear masks and stay six feet apart.” ....
