MIAMI – While we’ve all become familiar and comfortable using Zoom during the pandemic, it seems that commercial air traffic has, in its own way, been doing the same. In a press release, London City Airport (LCY) announced that it has become “the first major international airport” to be fully controlled by a remote digital air traffic control tower. All flights in this year’s summer schedules will be controlled remotely “following intensive testing and live trials of the revolutionary technology during lockdown”. This means that air traffic controllers based 115 kilometers away in Swanwick will direct flights at the airport via an ‘enhanced reality’ view provided by a state-of-the-art 50-meter automated control tower. ....
London City Airport has become the first major international airport to control air traffic remotely. The airport - which is the British capital s smallest - changed over to a digital remote system earlier this year but only officially announced the switch on Friday. The move was in part to facilitate a future expansion on the site which is built on former docklands next to London s financial district at Canary Wharf, airport bosses said. Fourteen high-definition cameras have been installed on a 50 metre-high tower which capture all the comings and goings on the runway. The video and audio are fed to a control room 70 miles away in Hampshire where the NATS (National Air Traffic Control Service) HQ is based. ....
London City has become the world’s first major airport fully controlled remotely via a digital tower. All flights are being guided to take-off or land by controllers who have relocated more than 70 miles away to Hampshire. A 50-metre tall digital control tower has been built at the airport, featuring 14 high-definition cameras and two cameras able to pan, tilt and zoom. A live feed of footage and audio from the airfield, plus radar information, is transmitted through an underground fibre optic network to a control room at the Swanwick base of air traffic control provider Nats, where it is displayed on 14 screens. ....
