The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has announced the appointment of Karen Melin as interim superintendent for the 2021-22 school year.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has announced the appointment of an interim superintendent for the 2021-22 school year.
After deliberations during a special school board meeting, the Board of Education unanimously voted to select Karen Melin.
“Karen Melin brings an understanding of education, Alaska, the Fairbanks community and our school district to the position,” said the release.
Melin is currently the Deputy Commissioner for Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. She previously worked for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District as a District Mentor, Intervention Specialist, and Assessment Coordinator. She ....

Fairbanks elementary school closed due to structural concerns of roof, cracked wall

Students were taken to nearby Lathrop High School, and parents were asked to fetch them.
Engineers are checking for structural inadequacies at the school, located at 1630 Gillam Way, according to Yumi McCulloch, director of public relations at the school district.
Parents were alerted of the problem shortly after 10 a.m. School for Hunter students was canceled for the remainder of the day.
âTeachers will touch base with students and families on Friday to assess needs and provide support,â Superintendent Karen Gaborik wrote in an email to Hunter families and school staff.
âThe safety of our students and staff is our highest priority,â she wrote in a separate email. ....

Two Southeast schools in tiny towns have shut their doors this year after their enrollments were expected to sink below 10 students, the minimum for full state funding.
The school in Port Protection, on the north end of Prince of Wales Island, had only 13 students last school year, while the other, Tenakee Springs School on Chichagof Island, had seven at the time of the October 2015 enrollment count, according to state data.
Residents in both towns said in the past, the school districts had opted to draw from their savings to keep the schools open when enrollment declined, but now they saw little chance of a future boost in student numbers unless new families moved in. ....
