Taaqpak 120 race to start Saturday, honoring Elder February 23rd |
The 2021 Taaqpak 120 will start Saturday at 12 p.m. Mushers will race from Kotzebue to Noatak and back through to the finish in Kotzebue. The musher entry deadline will be Wednesday. Entry fee is $120. The purse is $10,000. The Taaqpak 120 is named in memory of Elmer Taaqpak Howarth Sr. and honors the work of the Howarth family who partnered with the Kobuk 440 Racing Association to host this race. Taaqpak was a dog musher himself. Over the years, members of the Howarth family have volunteered on the trail crew, served as timekeeper, ran the checkpoint hospitality, and encouraged community members to join in. ....

Eva Gardner, who had family members killed in the Holocaust, contacted the Department of Motor Vehicles after seeing the first one. She emailed, The text is FUHRER, a word that is effectively synonymous with Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazis who was responsible for millions of genocidal deaths, mostly of Jews. As our nation and state struggles to contend with racial justice with the Black Lives Matter movement, Alaska honored its own hero in the civil rights movement, Elizabeth Peratrovich, who is credited with pushing through Alaska s Anti-Discrimination Act in 1945. Peratrovich s story is an impressive one, rivaling the stories of the likes of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. In a New York Times story earlier this year, the history of how she came to lead the early fight for civil rights for Alaska Natives noted that it was a sign on a hotel door that inspired her activism. Naknek man arrested for alleged assault with hatchet February 18th |
Naknek resident Christopher Gong, 34, faces one count of second degree felony assault after allegedly attacking a woman with a hatchet, according to a news release from the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and she has received medical treatment. The Borough police arrested Gong Feb. 9. Gong also faces two counts of violating conditions of release; he allegedly returned to a residence and contacted the woman while on bail for prior felony assault charges. Gong is currently being held in the Bristol Bay Borough Detention facility with bail set at $5,000. ....
